Please note, hurricane Ike forever changed the footprint of Bolivar Peninsula, therefore some homes listed as beachfront may have a lot and/or street in front of it. This is the result of the uncertainty following the storm where some property owners elected to participate in the government buy out of lots that fell in what later could be considered within the vegetation line established by the State of Texas and subsequently included as part of the public beach. Not all property owners participated. Those homes where the property in front of it are part of the buyout are considered beachfront even though to the east or west of it there may be a home closer to the beach.

The cabin was clean, the view was perfect of the sunrises and sunsets. Beachcombing just steps away. The yard was freshly mowed. The kitchen was perfectly stocked with every thing needed. The air was cold, the appliances were top notch. Beautifully decorated. The middle deck was so nice and enjoyable, with a bathroom right there.- John L. from Call, Posted: 05/25/2019
We came with kids for birding, fishing and beach walking. Great place for all three! Liked being outside of Crystal Beach and closer to the birding in High Island and the beach was clean and fairly private. Recommend bringing your own food as there are few restaurants worth eating at (except for Steve's Landing) and all are expensive.- Anonymous from Boulder, Posted: 03/22/2019
There weren't really any surprises - the reviews and description were accurate. The good things that stood out were that the location was great (a short, easy walk to the beach - even with a 2 and 4 year old) and the view was spectacular. Not so great was the mustiness that has us sniffling and that stayed around the 5 days we were there (probably problematic for all beachside rentals). Overall the positives way outweighed the negatives and we'd stay there again.- David W. from Fort Worth, Posted: 10/11/2018
The house was clean and very nice, my cousin has good taste. We did replace the broken light fixture by the front door, so don't pay who ever was supposed to do that job. The only thing I can see that would improve this property is to have a lift, that is A LOT of stairs. We had an awesome time and are looking forward to our next visit at the end of the month.- Bonnie B. from Red Rock, Posted: 07/15/2015
Great location, quiet part of island, close to rollover pass. Perfect for small get togeather. Had 2 gran kids ; 4&2 years old, bedroom set up with the double and two twins was the greatest idea, both jumped in their beds and slept with no problems- think a million $ could be made marketing this bedroom layout to new parents with kids who won't sleep in their own beds!
Great little place to stay.- Anonymous from Waller, Posted: 07/29/2014

This is the 2nd time that we have rented Happy Honu and we will rent it again next summer. We love this place.- Melissa S. from Houston, Posted: 08/22/2013
We (girlfriend, her boys & friends) had a great time! Beach was awesome, house was very nice. Wind was howling all weekend, that was the only damper. If you haven't been on Bolivar lately you should go. We look forward to returning soon.- John S. from El Lago, Posted: 05/08/2013
Aside from the weather being a bit erratic (but it is still winter!) and fighting the Houston traffic in getting there:), we had a wonderful time. Lots to do including biking and castle-building on the beach, deep-sea fishing and just plain relaxing out on the sun! This is our second annual stay at the Happy Honu and I'm sure we'll be back. Actually, we're considering a mid-summer stay if there is availability.- Antonino I. from Caddo Mills, Posted: 03/17/2013
Location was perfect like having your own private beach. Beach house is much nicer than the it justice.Lots of stairs makes for a good workout.Showers down stairs were great after coming back from the beach.Would love to come back next year!- Jeff B. from Arlington, Posted: 09/11/2012
Our stay at Happy Honu was wonderful. The house is great the beach was almost private and the island is is charming. We will rent it again next summer.- Melissa S. from Houston, Posted: 07/10/2012
We always have a great time when we stay at Happy Hona. My only concern is the steps, I had a small child age six visit for a day and she trip on steps. Luckily we were right there, because of the opening distance in between the steps, she almost went all the way thur which would have landed her on the ground. Don't get me wrong they are probably built to code and are very nice, I just wish there was someway to enclose the underneath the opening of steps, because that would have been a horrible outcome. They do have gates on the second level to keep closed, but not on the upper level. I did mention it to Cobb's when returning the key. This place is very clean and fun. Looking forward to maybe another stay this year.- Kim H. from Lumberton, Posted: 07/02/2012
We had a wonderful time, there was plenty of room and the house was nicely decorated. The only problem is that no one comes by with the motorgrader and cleans the beach shore. By the second day the sea weed was so bad that you couldnt get to the beach. we stay in galveson for several years and all the other private houses that we have stayed in have a service that blades the beach in front of the rental property. Overall the house was nice and we would stay there again.- Jennifer H. from Oakwood, Posted: 05/30/2012
